Roots Community Health Center

Founded in Oakland, California, the mission of Roots Community Health Center is to uplift those impacted by systemic inequities and poverty. We accomplish this through medical and behavioral health care, health navigation, workforce enterprises, housing, outreach, and advocacy.

Roots Community Health Center (Roots) is a non-profit state licensed community health center with three full-scope primary care sites, a mobile homeless clinic, two satellite clinics in youth shelters, and street outreach teams, that provides primary medical and mental health care services, including COVID-19 testing, to the economically marginalized communities of Oakland and San Jose. Additionally, Roots serves many of Alameda county’s largest homeless encampments, and two of Oakland’s recently established emergency shelter sites (Almost Home helped fund one of them!). Roots delivers diapers and educational resources to families with small children, and aids home-bound seniors and patients with complex medical and mental health needs with transportation to health and social services appointments, as well as healthy food box home deliveries.

Roots is an essential provider playing a front-line role in helping address the COVID-19 pandemic in the Bay Area. We continue to fully operate all of our sites and programs, in addition to providing community walk-up COVID testing. To date, we have conducted over 1,500 tests – and counting!

Almost Home Oakland

California accounts for 50% of the nation’s homeless population. As of January 2018, California had an estimated 129,972 people experiencing homelessness. From 2017 to 2019 the total homeless population grew from 2,761 to 4,071 people, both sheltered and unsheltered. Oakland’s per capita homeless rate has now surpassed San Francisco and Berkeley. The city is investing in a wide variety of critical efforts to shelter and house individuals. This includes establishing cabin communities and opening safe RV parking sites. What is our solution? Build Cabin Communities! Community Cabin sites are an emergency intervention designed to serve as a temporary bridge from the sidewalk to services, from the streets to housing.

Cabins provide: linkage to healthcare, mental health services, and addiction recovery services, assistance in securing benefits, acquiring a California ID, and job seeking.
